Application Equipment Periodic Maintenance

To keep an ITW Gema powder coating system operating at peak performance, routine maintenance is essential. The following guidelines should be incorporated into a periodic system maintenance schedule. There are various factors to consider when implementing a maintenance program for your particular powder coating system. These points are general but important, and should not be overlooked.

Routine Maintenance
Performed on Each Shift

• Determine if gun control unit settings such as Voltage,
Current Limit, Powder and Air, are set to proper values.
• Verify powder level in the hopper and quality of
fluidization.
• Check recovery system filter static pressure.
• Clean powder hoses and injector bodies with
compressed air.
• Clean external surfaces of the guns.
• Clean room and surrounding area.

Performed Each Day
• Check injector inserts for wear and impact fusion
(use wear gauge tool for your specific injector.)
• Check plant compressed air and filters.
• Check sieve screen for tears. Remove and clean
vibratory sieve screens.

Performed Each Week

• Check collector or cyclone seals for signs of wear or
torn material.
• Check grounding of equipment.
• Clean and inspect injector bodies and check valves.
• Remove and clean nozzles and electrode holders,
check for wear.
• Check powder hoses for impact fusion and wear.
• Check gun mover operation.

Performed Monthly
• Test ground potential of parts to be coated. Resistance
should be < 1 meg Ohm.
• Test KV of guns to assure maximum transfer efficiency
potential by using ITW Gema test meter for an accurate
reading. (Test meter part number is 131237, for
ITW Gema Opti and Easy Series guns).
• Test flame detection with manufacturer test lamp. Also
check operation of any fire dampers. Systems with
automatic guns must be equipped with fire detection
that will shut down the system and impede powder flow
in case of fire.
• Test booth movement, if applicable.
• Check operation of all motors and moving parts. This
includes dust recovery system, sieves, booth mover,
floor sweep, rotary airlock, gun movers, etc.
• Test booth airflow and adjust damper if necessary.
Airflow through booth openings must be adequate to
contain powder and dust.

“We reduced our
powder usage by 20%
with the OptiFlex™”

THE COMPANY
Metcam, located in Alpharetta, GA and in operation for over 17 years, specializes in custom sheet metal fabrication, mechanical assembly, and electro-mechanical assembly. The company's mission is to provide high quality products and value added services, consistently satisfying customers through continuous improvements. "ITW Gema continues to introduce innovative products allowing us to be more competitive in the market place," stated David Sanders, Facility/EHS Manager. Previously using liquid pressure pot sprayers in their operation, Metcam switched to a competitors' manual powder coating equipment. After a few years, Metcam saw the need to acquire more efficient equipment that would provide a higher quality finish. Having used ITW Gema manual powder coating equipment for the last five years, they decided to add an additional powder coating unit to accommodate increased production. ITW Gema premier distributor, Air Power, Inc. introduced Metcam to the OptiFlex™ box unit.

THE RESULTS
"We received the OptiFlex box unit and were spraying in five minutes," remarked David Sanders. "Gema products have made my life easier." Metcam has recognized a 20% savings in powder, better adhesion and finish quality, and reduced color change times. "Maintenance and training on the OptiFlex is extremely easy and color changes are a cinch," stated David. "Our painters think Gema rules!" Metcam has found many other OptiFlex features to be beneficial, including the anti-static powder hose, the ability to adjust current, and the preset configurations. Estimated payback time for their new OptiFlex unit is 6-8 months. "ITW Gema product documentation is great and our distributor, Air Power, is very knowledgeable and on call at any time," noted David."Our experience with ITW Gema manual powder guns has been excellent from day one!"
