Here's how to avoid stalling your booth installation. Congratulations! You've decided to purchase a booth system for your new or existing powder coating operation. But now what? Your new booth will inevitably save you time and money on your product finishing, but it should also save you time and money when installing it, if done properly. Although many booths–especially those made by ITW Gema–are easy to install, attention should be paid to preparing the area of your plant where the booth will be located. Using the checklist below, you can minimize your installation time and put your powder coating system into production sooner. GOOD AREA PREPARATION • Open, clean, well-lit area • Enough clearance to move all equipment into the final area • A level floor LIGHTING • Minimum of 80 ft. candles at 3 ft. above the floor EQUIPMENT LOCATION • Space above the booth for non-turbulent air flow should be at least 4 ft. • Standard distance is 6 ft. clearance to anything near the entrance or • exit vestibules • Locate the booth a minimum of 20 ft. from an oven or washer HVAC IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL ROOM • Fresh air volume sized into system should provide an average of 15-20 • FPM velocity through all room openings • Calculate all heat loads, such as part differential temperatures, lighting, • people, motors and electronics IDEAL TEMPERATURE • 75 degrees F plus or minus 10 degrees F and 50% relative humidity • plus or minus 10% LEVEL FLOOR • If booth is being moved on or off-line, the floor needs to be level to • plus or minus 1/4 inch over a 10 ft. x 10 ft. area CLEAN AND DRY AIR OPERATING PRESSURES • Maximum pressure should be 125 PSI and minimum pressure should • be 90 PSI • Dew point of compressed air must be 38 degrees F or lower at 100 PSI FILTRATION • Compressed air must be filtered so it contains less than 0.1 ppm of oil • and has no particulate contaminants greater than 0.3 microns A GOOD GROUND • Maximum resistance to ground should be 1 megohm These statements are, of course, guidelines to assist you in the evaluation of existing or needed facilities and services to assure a successful powder coating booth installation. ITW Gema provides installation supervision and training with each booth system and a more detailed listing of installation requirements, depending on the booth system purchased.
